Depths describe the recreational profile we dive, not the cenote's maximum depth. Requirements are minimum guidelines; the final choice also depends on your recent experience, buoyancy, comfort and the day's conditions.
The halocline
Fresh water over salt.
At Chikin Ha, fresh water sits on top of denser salt water. Where the two meet, the water can shimmer and distort, like looking through heat haze. It is a normal part of the dive, not a hazard.
Good buoyancy keeps the experience clean: holding your level lets you watch the layer rather than stirring it up, and keeps sediment and roots undisturbed for the divers behind you.

What Chikin Ha asks of you.
Certification is only part of it. Depth alone doesn't make a cenote easy or hard — passage size, light, distance from the entrance and fragile formations matter too.
CREER level
Level 01Starter

- Shallow, fairly constant depth · Wide passages · Constant natural light
- Starter does not mean no skill is required. Normal cavern buoyancy and control still apply.
CDT requirements
- Open Water or one-star (minimum)
- Diving within the previous 6 months (otherwise a refresher dive at Casa Cenote may be recommended or required)
Minimum age 15. Level per the CREER classification framework, used as a reference — not a progression you must complete in order.
The CREER level describes the site's relative character and difficulty; it is not a progression you must complete in order. Within CDT's requirements, your guide also considers recent experience, buoyancy and control, comfort, the day's conditions and the planned profile.

Dive routes
Two dives. Two different sides of Chikin Ha.
West Line
Up to 14 m / 46 ft
Brighter, broad passages with natural light. It connects with Rainbow Cenote, and the route can surface inside it.
East Line
Up to 14 m / 46 ft
More introspective, with strong light contrasts and a halocline. It crosses the Rainbow area underwater.
Chikin Ha can provide two distinct dives in the same location — a complete day on its own — or be combined with another cenote, depending on your experience and interests.
