The cenotes of the Riviera Maya: sacred portals to the underworld and the epicentre of cenote diving

Cenotes are natural formations created by the collapse of limestone caves, linked to an ancient network of subterranean rivers. They were sacred to the Maya and today are true windows into the jungle’s underworld.

Diving a cenote means entering crystal-clear water with up to 50-metre visibility, crossing haloclines that bend the light and discovering passages decked with stalactites, fossils and hanging roots. Each cenote has its own spirit: some, like Dos Ojos or Nicte Ha, offer wide, tranquil routes; others, such as The Pit or Angelita, are deep, technical and magical.

Exploring a cenote isn’t just a dive; it’s a connection with a unique underwater dimension.
