Riviera Maya Cenotes: Sacred Portals to the Underworld and Epicenter of Cenote Diving

Cenotes are natural sinkholes formed when limestone caves collapse, linking to an ancient network of underground rivers. Once revered as sacred by the Maya, they are now true windows into the jungle underworld.

Diving a cenote means entering crystal-clear waters with up to 50 m visibility, crossing haloclines that bend the light, and discovering passages lined with stalactites, fossils and hanging roots. Each cenote has its own character: some, like Dos Ojos or Nicte Ha, offer wide, tranquil circuits; others, such as The Pit or Angelita, are deep, technical and magical.

Exploring a cenote isn’t just another dive—it’s a connection to an underwater dimension found nowhere else on Earth.

Want to delve into the history, science and magic behind cenotes? Discover how they formed, why they’re unique and what secrets their ecosystem holds by reading the National Geographic feature.
