Diving The Pit and Dos Ojos — The Depth of Light
A day of vertical drops and underground light
This tour pairs The Pit and Dos Ojos for Advanced Open Water (or equivalent) divers. It brings together two opposite worlds—the pit cenote dive with its ethereal depth, and Dos Ojos with crystal light—making one of the Riviera Maya’s most striking underwater experiences.
The Pit — A descent into a cathedral of light
The Pit opens with a dramatic vertical drop between white limestone walls. Sunbeams form light columns and, around 30 m/100 ft, a halocline splits fresh and salt layers into a floating-mist effect. It’s deep and contemplative, demanding fine buoyancy and steady self-control.
Dos Ojos — A sanctuary of blue light
The Pit opens with a dramatic vertical drop between white limestone walls. Sunbeams form light columns and, around 30 m/100 ft, a halocline splits fresh and salt layers into a floating-mist effect. It’s deep and contemplative, demanding fine buoyancy and steady self-control.
A program designed for experienced divers
Exploring The Pit and Dos Ojos in a single day delivers the perfect balance between adrenaline and calm. Itinerary
Daily plan
Pickup and Transportation
We start the day with hotel pick-up at 8:00 a.m. From Playa del Carmen, we head south toward Tulum to reach Dos Ojos Park, home to the two cenotes we will dive on this deep-dive day at The Pit and Dos Ojos. Both belong to the world’s largest underwater cave system—a natural jewel of the Riviera Maya.
Dive Preparation
Before entering the water, we deliver a full safety briefing and gear check. Your certified guide explains each cenote’s unique features, visibility conditions, descent points, and underwater light-communication protocols. For this type of deep cenote diving, buoyancy control and team awareness are essential for a smooth, safe dive.
3. Primera Inmersión: El Pit – Descenso a la luz vertical
Maximum depth: 30 meters (90 feet)
We begin at The Pit, a conical cenote with an impressive vertical descent. As we drop, sunbeams filter from the surface to create guiding columns of light. Around 30 meters/100 ft, a hydrogen sulfide layer separates fresh and salt water, producing a striking, one-of-a-kind visual effect. This section of the pit cenote dive offers a quiet, immersive atmosphere—perfect for those who enjoy depth and awe-inspiring natural scenery.
Surface Interval and Refreshments
After the first dive, we take a break to hydrate and debrief. Enjoy fresh fruit and light snacks while we get ready for the second dive at Dos Ojos, just a few minutes away within the same park.
Second Dive: Dos ojos – Clarity, color, and serenity
Maximum Depth: 9 meters (30 ft)
Dos Ojos is the perfect counterpart to The Pit. Here we make a wider, more relaxed dive, exploring caverns filled with limestone formations and blue light beams that shift with the water. Its name comes from the two circular entrances that illuminate the system and deliver spectacular views. During this segment, we follow one of the most popular routes—the Barbie Line or the Bat Cave—both spacious, visually striking, and perfectly safe for certified divers.
Return
After both dives, we return to your hotel or residence in Playa del Carmen or Tulum. This concludes an unforgettable day of deep diving at The Pit and Dos Ojos—where light, depth, and silence converge into one of the Riviera Maya’s most emblematic underwater experiences.
