Frequently Asked Questions about Cenote Diving in Playa del Carmen
If this is your first time diving in cenotes, it’s completely normal to have questions.
Here we answer the most important ones so you can understand how the experience works, what you need, and what to expect when diving in the cenotes of the Riviera Maya with Cenote Dive Tour.
Before diving in cenotes
Do I need certification to dive in cenotes?
Yes, in most cases. Requirements depend on the type of dive:
- Cavern diving (recreational): requires at least an Open Water Diver certification
- Cave diving (technical): requires specialized certifications such as Full Cave Diver
- Discovery Scuba Diving: no certification required, available only in shallow open cenotes
¿Puedo bucear en cavernas siendo Open Water?
Yes. Open Water divers can dive in caverns as long as they follow the guide’s instructions, who will lead the dive safely along the cavern line.
Before entering the water, your guide provides a clear and practical briefing on cavern navigation, air management, communication signals, and everything you need to feel comfortable and safe during the dive.
¿Cuál es la diferencia entre caverna y cueva?
The difference is not only about light, but also physical conditions and the level of training required:
- Cavern: remains within the natural light zone and close to the exit → recreational diving
- Cave: involves greater complexity, including no natural light, tighter passages where only one diver can pass at a time, or greater distance from the entrance (over 60 m / 200 ft) → technical diving
In practical terms, the difference lies in the environmental conditions and the level of training required.
• In cavern diving, Open Water divers can participate when guided by a certified Full Cave guide, following established safety procedures.
• In cave diving, specific technical certifications are required, such as Full Cave Diver, due to the absence of natural light and increased complexity.
Who guides the cenote dives?
Our team is bilingual, professional, and approachable, focused on providing a safe, clear, and well-guided experience at all times, adapting to your level and pace underwater.
Cenotes and your diving level
Are all cenotes the same?
Some cenotes are more open and full of light, while others can be darker, with tighter spaces or fine sediment that requires better buoyancy control. There are also deeper cenotes, where dives can reach up to approximately 30–33 meters (100–110 feet).
For this reason, rather than thinking in terms of “levels,” what matters most is choosing the right cenote based on your experience, comfort, and type of diving.
At Cenote Dive Tour, we personally guide you in selecting the cenotes that best match your level and preferences.
What is a cenote dive like step by step?
Each dive follows a clear and well-structured process designed to keep you safe while allowing you to fully enjoy the experience.
Before entering the water, we conduct a comprehensive briefing covering cavern navigation, guideline use, underwater communication, air management, and proper use of dive lights.
Durante la inmersión, el guía lidera el recorrido siguiendo la línea de caverna, manteniendo siempre el control del grupo y adaptando el ritmo a los buzos.
Throughout the dive, you’ll have close guidance, clear procedures, and planning focused on safety, control, and enjoyment.
How do you choose the right cenote for me?
We don’t operate with fixed routes.
We select each cenote based on your certification level, recent experience, air consumption, and the type of experience you’re looking for.
This allows us to design safer, smoother dives that are truly tailored to each diver.
Our guides and safety standards
What certifications and experience do your guides have?
All our guides are certified cave divers (Full Cave) and trained as Divemasters or instructors, with extensive experience in cenotes and underground environments.
We operate with small groups, permanent guideline navigation, and clear procedures, where the guide’s experience is the most important factor for a safe and well-controlled dive.
Who are the guides and in what language is the activity conducted?
We work with certified professional guides with extensive experience in cenotes and underground diving environments.
All activities are conducted in both Spanish and English, with clear explanations and close guidance throughout the experience.
Our approach combines technical expertise, clear communication, and personalized attention so you feel comfortable and well guided at all times.
Which cenotes are best for beginners?
Cenote selection depends on your level, recent experience, and comfort in the water.
Instead of assigning a standard site, we choose each cenote based on your profile, prioritizing good visibility, easy access, and spacious areas so the experience feels progressive and well adapted.
Cenotes like Dos Ojos, Eden, Casa Cenote, or Carwash are often great options, but we always define the plan with you to choose the best setting for your dive.
What if I feel nervous or unsure during the experience?
It’s completely normal to feel nervous, especially if it’s your first time diving in cenotes.
Our team supports you at all times with clear explanations, a progressive pace, and close guidance so you feel comfortable from the beginning. You always decide how to proceed. If you prefer to stop or not continue, you can do so and safely return with your guide at any moment.

The experience
How deep do you dive in cenotes?
In cenotes (cavern diving), dives are typically conducted between 8 and 15 meters (26–50 feet), within the natural light zone.
For ocean diving, depths vary depending on the site and diver level, and can reach deeper profiles.
Algunos cenotes permiten descensos mayores, de hasta 30–33 metros (100–110 pies), pero estos perfiles se realizan únicamente cuando el nivel, certificación y experiencia del buzo lo permiten.
Each dive is planned individually to ensure a comfortable, well-managed profile adapted to your level.
How many dives are done in a day?
The standard format is 2 dives per day, with surface intervals for rest, hydration, and snacks.
In cenotes, it is possible to add a third dive (third tank), with logistics planned based on the distance between sites to maintain a comfortable pace throughout the experience.
For ocean diving, trips are typically conducted with 2 dives per outing.
